A critical enterprise provisioning system faced a serious infrastructure challenge when its 130+ bare-metal servers approached end-of-life status. The existing deployment process was not only unsustainable but also inefficient—requiring up to 8 hours and 6 team members to complete production deployments using fragile bash scripts. This manual approach created significant risks, inconsistencies, and limited visibility into system operations.
Comprehensive Modernization
The organization embarked on a strategic infrastructure transformation, migrating the provisioning system services to a robust VMware environment with consolidated resources. The team completely rebuilt their deployment process, replacing manual scripts with an automated Continuous Integration/ /Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipeline powered by Ansible and Bamboo. Key improvements included migrating configuration data from databases to dedicated servers, implementing Git-based version control for both deployment pipelines and service configurations, and establishing centralized monitoring for comprehensive log aggregation and metrics visualization. Additionally, the team introduced a governance framework requiring stakeholder approval before promoting new service versions to production environments.
The transformation delivered impressive business value. Production deployment time was reduced from 8 hours to just 2 hours (a 75% improvement) while simultaneously cutting required personnel in half, from 6 to 3 team members. The standardized infrastructure code across development and production environments simplified issue resolution and improved consistency.
Perhaps most importantly, the provisioning system now benefits from enhanced observability through centralized monitoring, enabling proactive issue detection and faster troubleshooting. The new governance workflow provides transparent, controlled change management with clear accountability, while separate development environments allow for more thorough testing before production releases.
